On 12/13 August Aesthetic Options held its first Wellness Weekend, a hugely successful event focused on women and their health wellness and support.

In celebration of Women’s day, the Aesthetic Options team paid tribute to women, with a weekend focused on understanding and celebrating mind, body, and soul. Everything from intimate health, body strength and the power of the mind was pulled out into the open and discussed with a range of health and wellness specialists, local influencers, inspiring clients and suppliers of quality products and services.

From yoga classes, product demonstrations and promotions to good food and drink the weekend enabled a time of connection and sharing, where no subject was off limits and every person there was celebrated for who they were. “It was such an amazing weekend and we so enjoyed seeing our community and clients coming together to learn about the importance of bio-psycho-emotional health,” said Dr Francois Ehlers.

Thanks to the event sponsors, the weekend ended with a raffle and some awesome prizes to be won, with all the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Awareness.

Top International Skills Brought Home

We are so excited to have Dr Vincent Ehlers back from his 4-week educational sabbatical and to have his top international skills brought home. Travelling to Dubai, Monaco, Italy and Istanbul, Dr Vince trained with world-renowned hair restoration experts and developed his skills with some of the best global cosmetic injectors .

Dr Vince is our hair restoration expert and hair transplant surgeon, and he dedicated three weeks of his trip to learning and perfecting various hair restoration procedures. Joined by our aesthetics specialist Dr Kajal Bisseru, and hair restoration assistant Tumelo Motlatla, the team worked alongside world-renowned transplant experts Dr Akaki Tsilosani from The Tsilosani Hair Clinic in Georgia, Dr Donato Zizi and Dr ssa Marianna Tornese both from BioRigeneral Clinic in Italy. Together these surgeons have performed over 35 000 hair transplant procedures.

Dr Vince also attended The Aesthetic Medicine World Congress (AMWC) in Monaco – the largest aesthetic medicine conference in the world. All the leading aesthetic companies in the world were in attendance displaying their latest innovations from dermal fillers, botulinum toxin, body augmenting fillers and energy-based devices, to imaging systems and skin therapeutics.

Dr Francois Ehlers is a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch.

He has a post-graduate qualification in emergency medicine (DipPEC) and is an existing member of the Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa (EMSSA). His clinical experience in Khayelitsha District Hospital has equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a valuable contribution to the private healthcare sector.

His journey into aesthetic medicine sees him focused on full facial rejuvenation; thread lifting and men and women’s sexual health. Dr Francois has received training and worked alongside renowned local and international medical practitioners considered to be pioneers in their respective fields of Aesthetic Medicine, and has had the opportunity to travel abroad to attend international congresses in Aesthetics.

Hair Shedding – Don’t Panic

Hair shedding – Don’t panic. While any loss or thinning of the hair can be very stressful it is not all doom and gloom and there is help at hand to manage the causes and treat the effects.

When the body is exposed to excessive stress, which can be felt in many forms, from illness, infection and surgery, to nutritional imbalance or psychological distress, the hair growth cycle is disrupted. This leads to abnormal shedding of hair known as Telogen Effluvium.

Normal daily hair shedding sees 50-150 hairs lost, and this usually goes completely unnoticed. In a person with Telogen Effluvium, there is an abnormal increase in the proportion of hair follicles in the resting phase of the hair cycle (known as telogen), which leads to excessive shedding and thinning of hair. This condition is self-limiting which means once the underlying cause of the stress is addressed and removed, hair growth should return to normal over a period of 6 – 12 months.

While this return of natural hair growth is good news, for many this time period seems like a lifetime which is where we step in to help. For the global aesthetic medicine market, the impact of COVID-19 has been a wild ride, from a near industry crash to a surge in demand, which value of this global market set at $64.6 billion (USD) at the end of 2021.

Your scalp is incredibly rich in blood supply, nerve endings, and oil glands. Additionally, this yeast (Pityrosporum) builds up, leading to dandruff. The combination of these factors can cause inflammation, which translates to sensitivity that can feel like your hair is hurting.

The fact that greasy hair is often put up in a tight ponytail – and sometimes swept in a bun for sleeping – doesn’t help matters. Wearing your hair in the same style, like a tight ponytail, cornrows, buns or braids for days at a time, can also contribute to more pain. Signs indication you may have a Vitamin D deficiency include having dark skin, obesity, achy bones, feeling blue, over the age of 50, head sweating and poor immune function. Your best bet is to get your Vitamin D levels tested twice a year. The optimal range for general health appears to be somewhere between 50 and 70g/ml.

Get some sensible sun exposure. Contrary to popular belief the best time to be in the sun for Vitamin D production is actually as near to solar noon as possible – but keep it short. UVB rays are most tense at this time. When the sun goes down towards the horizon, the UVB is filtered out much more that the dangerous UVA.

Vitamin D rich food and D3 supplements may also be necessary if you cannot get adequate sun exposure during the year.

And did you know Glyphosate (round-up) has being shown to interfere with enzymes responsible for activating Vitamin D in your liver and kidneys. We found that most patients with hair loss have a Vitamin D deficiency when blood tests are done.
